Here are two of the top concerns and questions I get all the time:

1 – How many affiliates does each network have and how do I get them all active?

No one besides the networks like cj.com or linkshare.com they being the top 2 because of being around the longest with the most joined affiliates, really know how many affiliates there are in each network. In 2007 a post, on a popular forum, was made from a network rep that they had over 200K joined publishers and a merchant once posted back in 04′ that they were quoted one million ( 1M ) joined network publishers. Though amazon.com which is really the biggest and been around even the longest with their own type of network platform as we all know, they may really have one million affiliates and of all types. Perhaps you have been quoted the same or various publisher numbers too, just keep it confidential or they might ban you, lol.

There are many different types of stores, merchants and product offers and so the same goes for affiliates as some only promote coupons and some only promote products through data feed and some only promote Lead type offers, but the total number of publishers or affiliates in a particular platform or network does not really matter because the reality is that all publishers at least the TOP producers, are on all the major networks and even including Amazon. They usually will find you and join and promote your program and products but your focus should always be on reaching out gently and with relevant emails and promotions perhaps once per month to the top affiliates, ( while also recruiting new affiliate too of course  ), but that are active and sending traffic and when I say active I mean ‘active’ not ‘joined’. They all usually join your program but it can take time even a year for most publishers to review your site, your offers, your commissions, your data feed, if you offer coupons, if you allow coupons, if you allow trade mark usage and bidding via PPC, do you provide custom coupon offers and landing pages, if you are spamming them with daily or weekly emails and newsletters and promotions, specially promotions that already expired on even on the same day, those are a NO, NO.

We all know there are hundreds of stores and programs and offers for hundreds of affiliates to look over so they might even do test purchases on your site through an affiliate link to see if it tracks and do you have a great store, a smooth chekout process and most important NO leaks such as Adsense ads or even links to other stores. Some affiliates will subscribe to your newsletters to see what you promote to consumers that will also help them promote you better too.  So then again, you could basically have 1k to 10k joined affiliates, depending on your site and products, but it’s usually only the top 100 – 500 that are active sending you traffic and making sales so pay close attention to your program.

2 – Should we be on separate networks at the same time?

Most often you can and it all depends on your store, service and products, but I would not recommend being on two separate performance type networks at the same time if you are just promoting products. If you have an in house program and then a network program setup this can work ok but maybe only if you have a good programmer that will implement proper coding but, you may still have duplicate sales occur and often and at the same time. Then, the next problem is that you will have to find who the last affiliate was that tracked and sent the sale and then reverse/void the other transaction on the other network. Not only does that drop your Earnings Per Click ( EPC ) and look as if you are not making sales, but it will cause you lots of headaches long term.

Most affiliates will get mad, even though often they will not email you, if they see too many reversals. Usually in this situation you being on two networks is because they may not even know that you have your program on two networks so when they see too many voids they may stop promoting your store all together or even worse if they have PPC set up for your keywords. It is also usually also a tracking pixel issue or a last cookie in and sometimes a great programmer can make it so that it will track and pay only on the real cookie from the last affiliate transaction but it is still risky, don’t say I did not warn you.

I’ve seen this often and with one of my managed programs the merchant was never told they were paying and getting duplicate orders so all looked great, until I took over and told the merchant the above and the truth. So if you understand cookies, tracking and shopping carts or have a great programmer have them code and try it if you really want to be on multiple platforms. But would you? Like I said above most all affiliates are on all the top networks and will usually often find you if you are good fit for their site.
